A simple watch that is comfortable to wear and that indicates the time only when you want it. As you touch the outer surface of the watch, the time appears and slowly fades out after a couple of seconds. You can change the soft cushioned fabric inlay to the color that matches your current outfit best and it is washable.

The most challenging part of the project was to get information about a topic that people barely talk about. The poster shown in image 1 & 2 served as a conversation starter. Participants were handed colored stickers to express their opinion. (women - pink: where should a men be shaved? men - blue: where do you shave?)
To engage people in a conversation a combination of humor and being straightforward with the topic turned out to be very successful. Main element was a questionnaire in which a booklet was handed out, filled with statements around body shaving that derived from Internet-Forums.
(see images 3-8) Those statements were deliberately controversial and motivated the respondents to leave their own comments in the booklet. At the same time information on specific questions like preferred trim lengths, shaving tools or general shaving habits were collected.
Other research areas were a detailed use analysis with various products, a technical analysis and taking a look at a small number of users more in detail by considering not only their shaving habits and products but also their hobbies and product environments.

The research portion was conducted by the entire 13-student project group.

Due to its capabilities and decreasing price touch screens are used more and more in consumer products. The touchscreen is helping everyday objects become more natural and smarter, but we don’t need a touchscreen or App for every object in our house. For simple household objects it rather removes people from the context of the object and increases complexity. .
In the field of lighting there are currently interesting technologies evolving that allow for new and more natural ways to interact with an object. Read the full article, including more concepts on the Artefact website or watch a brief slideshare presentation.

Presumably for marketing reasons, consumer products are equipped with more and more functions. Digital products are often getting more complex and complicated, rather than simplifying the handling.
“Knipsengucken” is a system for digital photography that does not require a computer and still allows the user to enjoy all advantages of digital photography. Consisting of a digital camera and a photo viewer it enables the user to take pictures, view, edit and archive them. The digital camera does not imply functions, which require photographic knowledge and is addressed to the wide target group of amateur photographers. Each of the two units consists of two casings, which are attached to each other by a reinforced multi core cable sewed in a webbing. Magnets avoid that the two casings get out of place.
This combination allows for a flip function, that provides many advantages:
The flip function both protects the feature parts (display, lens, ..) and allows easy and safe carrying without an additional carrying case.
For the auto timer function it is possible to place the camera half opened, so that the user can see himself in the display to find the right detail of the picture.
The flip function allows for a “digital picture frame” function.
The soft emotional character of the webbing makes the camera appear less technical and more accessible. The operational structure of the digital camera and the picture viewer is identical, so that the system is easy to understand for the user. The touch screen displays only the necessary information and control elements. The menus offer optional help facilities, which can be activated or deactivated in the standard settings. To start the automatic data transfer as well as to save photos on the picture viewer, the camera must be inserted completely into the picture viewer. The photos will then automatically be copied into a new folder on the picture viewer, titled with the current date. It is also possible to store or transport the camera space-savingly in the picture viewer.
The picture viewer enables the user to edit, archive and view the photos. It displays the photos in the accustomed picture size.
Printing as well as editing or saving photos on the computer is not necessary anymore, but remains an optional feature. “knipsengucken” makes digital photography accessible even for the computer-inexperienced user.

The OLED (organic LED) floor lamp is a plane light source and creates a very diffuse pleasant light, akin to daylight. The lamp is controlled in an analogue way. Unfolding it like an umbrella combines the beautiful motion of opening the lamp with its on/off switch, which creates a unique sensitive experience that reminds of a flower that opens during daylight. The OLED technology that is used is very energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The design of the lamp emphasizes the characteristics of the new lighting technology: Thinness, Lightness and Transparency.

The OLED (organic LED) ceiling lamp creates a very diffuse pleasant light, akin to daylight. Different dynamic light programs as well as manual controlling possibilities for static light allow for many lighting situations that adapt to the needs of the user. The use of the OLED technology enables besides dynamic light color and intensity changes also smoothly changing light directions and wandering shadows, which turn the indoor artificial lighting even more into natural outdoor light conditions. This is something completely new to the consumer lighting market. In addition different opening angles enable different light directions. All lighting options are controlled via a remote control with an easy to understand touch screen interface. The OLED technology that is used is very energy efficient and environmentally friendly. In the near future an efficiency of up to 140 lm/W is targeted (state of the art is 64 lm/W). In comparison the efficiency of a light bulb is 13- 25 lm/W.

The brief of this project was to develop a design for a male body shaver that is targeted at young men between 16 and 35 who shave or trim their body hair. This target group is constantly growing, but there was still a lack of products that specifically address this new need.
The safest shave is achieved by a shaver with one shaving foil, which adjusts perfectly in small curves (e.g. genital area or armpit). To achieve an effective, smooth shave even if you have stubbles or if you want to shave large areas twin foils and an integrated cutter are required. My concept combines the advantages of both shaving systems and creates though a very versatile shaver. Two adjustable shaving foils and an integrated cutter allow for a close shave even if you have long hairs and stubbles. The new shift-able shaving foil is highly adjustable and ensures a safe shave also in the genital area. Separate mounted flexible shaving foils automatically adjust to every skin contour for a close shave. Trim & Shave in one stroke makes the shave of broad areas very effective. Pushing the long hair trimmer forward opens additional styling options.

The project was a collaboration with the Braun GmbH R&D department.
The research portion was conducted by the entire 13-student project group.

The more we learn about our bodies, how to improve them, and where to go to get the right help, the more we feel we are in control and the better quality of life we can achieve.
At Artefact I worked with Jennifer Darmour, Verena Lugmayr and Fernd van Engelen on a short conceptual project about improving personal health and wellness. We came up with "modwells":
The modwells system delivers a consumer-focused health care experience integrated into your daily life. It improves your physical and emotional health, and enhances your quality of life. The system respects the unique health and well being needs of each user and accommodates those needs through a customizable solution that blurs the line between traditional medical products and consumer products. The system consists of:
Mods: a collection of input and output sensors that collect and assess health data, provide basic feedback and alerts.
Trestle: A trestle that presents data and interaction. The trestle also recharges the mods wirelessly.
Accessories: A collection of optional accessories that extend the mod’s capabilities
A cross-platform software application: enables users to work with their personal health data, manage goals, share experiences with friends and connect with health care professionals

I had the opportunity to work on this project lead by Markus Wierzoch and Fernd van Engelen during my internship at Carbon Design Group in 2008. In close collaboration with Intel and Artefact (responsible for the User Interface Design) we explored different display configurations and meaningful use scenarios for the displays. The concept enabled Intel to demonstrate fully-functional prototypes to its partners. To draw attention to the key area of innovation - the touch screens inside the product - the design is inspired by a geode: "stone on the outside, jewel on the inside."

Design influences how we interact with devices and impacts the way we experience technology. Based on this insight we generated concepts that leverage smart grid technology and encourage energy efficient behaviors.
This project focuses on convenience, usefulness, and desirability to the consumer. Our concepts leverage new capabilities like energy cost information and smart appliances. They raise awareness, motivate change, inform decisions in context, and offer new benefits without adding effort or inconvenience.During my time at Carbon Design Group I had the opportunity to collaborate with Jonas Buck from Carbon, Dave McColgin and Scott Smith from Artefact on this two week project.
